Council Bluffs is home to an above average school district with a 17:1 student-teacher ratio.  Within Council Bluffs there are two districts; Council Bluffs Community School District, with 11 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 high-schools, with an 87% graduation rate. (1)   As well as, Lewis Central School District with a 93% graduation Rate (2)

Throughout Pottawattamie County, there are 8 highly rated school districts.(3)

College & University

Council Bluffs is home to Iowa Western Community College, offering of 30 majors plus continuing ed and non-credit programs.

Besides our Iowa Western Reivers, we are also  within 15 miles of the University of Nebraska - Omaha, Creighton University, and University of Nebraska Medical Center - among many others!

Council Bluffs is less than a three-hour drive to Iowa State and less than a four hour drive to the University of Iowa.


Through Home Base Iowa, military veterans, their spouse and children can qualify for in-state tuition at no cost!
